Anomalous Hall response in two-dimensional topological insulators due to the Stark effect

چکیده

It is shown that the presence of matrix dipole moments induced by external electric fields can modify the Hall response in two-dimensional topological insulators. In the case of the quantum anomalous Hall effect the induced transverse currents acquire an extra term, being proportional to the Hall conductance and the time derivative of the applied electric field. In the case of the quantum spin Hall effect both spin and charge transverse currents appear simultaneously. In virtue of the bulk-edge correspondence the coupling between the chiral edge channels and the electromagnetic field changes, allowing for an extra nonminimal coupling term. Both effects can be measured through transport and tunneling experiments.

Quantum Hall states stabilized in semi-magnetic bilayers of topological insulators.

By breaking the time-reversal symmetry in three-dimensional topological insulators with the introduction of spontaneous magnetization or application of magnetic field, the surface states become gapped, leading to quantum anomalous Hall effect or quantum Hall effect, when the chemical potential locates inside the gap. Further breaking of inversion symmetry is possible by employing magnetic topol...

Colloquium: Topological Insulators

Topological insulators are electronic materials that have a bulk band gap like an ordinary insulator but have protected conducted states on their edge or surface. These states are possible due to the combination of spinorbit interactions and time-reversal symmetry. The two-dimensional (2D) topological insulator is a quantum spin Hall insulator, which is a close cousin of the integer quantum Hal...

Pure spin current devices based on ferromagnetic topological insulators

Two-dimensional topological insulators possess two counter propagating edge channels with opposite spin direction. Recent experimental progress allowed to create ferromagnetic topological insulators realizing a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state. In the QAH state one of the two edge channels disappears due to the strong ferromagnetic exchange field. We investigate heterostructures of topologica...

Magnetic quantum phase transition in Cr-doped Bi2(SexTe1-x)3 driven by the Stark effect.

The recent experimental observation of the quantum anomalous Hall effect has cast significant attention on magnetic topological insulators. In these magnetic counterparts of conventional topological insulators such as Bi2Te3, a long-range ferromagnetic state can be established by chemical doping with transition-metal elements. However, a much richer electronic phase diagram can emerge and, in t...
